अजीब है चाननवाला रेलवे स्टेशन बनाने की दास्तान

        फाजिल्का से कराची तक रेल लाइन बिछा दी गई। 1898 में फाजिल्का का रेलवे स्टेशन बन गया। फाजिल्का से कराची तक जाने वाली रेलवे लाइन पर फाजिल्का के बाद चाननवाला रेलवे स्टेशन बनाया गया। जिसको बनाने की दास्तान बड़ी रोचक है। बस यूं समझ लें कि दो सम्पन्न परिवारों में अपने-अपने गांव में रेलवे स्टेशन बनवाने की होड़ थी।। वह परिवार थे चाननमल सावनसुक्खा और चौ. हजूर सिंह। दोनोंं को ही ऑनरेरी मजिस्ट्रेट की पावर प्राप्त थी। बात 1935 की है। जब गांव में अलग-अलग दो आनाज मंडिया बनवाई गई। जहां बहावलपुर तक का आनाज बिक्री के लिए मंडियों में आता था। बात थी रेलवे स्टेशन बनवाने की। दोनों परिवारों का कहना था कि उनकी मंडी के नजदीक और उनके नाम पर रेलवे स्टेशन बनाया जाए ताकि अन्य गांवों से आने वाले आनाज व अन्य सामग्री उनकी मंडी में पहुंचे। बात जिला फिरोजपुर के डीसी एम. आर. सचदेव तक पहुंची। उन्होंने मामले को सुना, समझा और फैसला सुनाया कि जो व्यक्ति अपनी मंडी सही व बढिय़ा ढंग से बनवाएगा। उसके गांव में रेलवे स्टेशन बनाने की मंजूरी दी जाएगी। देखो, देखी मंडी सुंदर बनाने का कार्य युद्ध स्तर पर शुरू हो गया। दिन-रात कार्य चला। मंडियों के चारों ओर सुंदर गेट बनाये गए। 13 फुट तक ऊंची चारदीवारी बना दी गई। रातो-रात गांव बस गए। दोनों मंडियों के आसपास रौंनके बढ़ गई। डी.सी. एम. आर. सचदेव ने मंडियों का दौरा रखा। मंडियों की एक-एक कलाकृति को चैक किया गया। आखिर डी.सी. ने फैैसला सुनाया कि जिला बोर्ड के सदस्य व सफेदपोश उपाधि से नवाजे जा चुके श्री चाननमल द्वारा बनाई गई मंडी बढिय़ा है और उनकी मंडी के निकट ही रेलवे स्टेशन बनाने की आज्ञा दे दी। देखते ही देखते चानणवाला मंडी प्रसिद्ध मंडी बन गई। जहां दूर-दूर से यहां अनाज पहुंचता। यहां से कच्चा माल अन्य शहरों में जाने लगा। यहां रेलवे का जंकशन बनाया गया। यहां से एक ट्रेन कराची तक चलती थी और दूसरी ट्रेन सुलेमानकी हैड तक चलती थी, जिसे के जरिए सामान भेजा जाता था। मंडी चाननवाला के मुख्य गेट व दीवार तो उखाड़ ली गई। उसके सबूत बाकी नहीं बचे, लेकिन मंडी हजूर सिंह की मंडी में बनाया गया गेट आज भी मौजूद है। उस गेट का नाम है सचदेव गेट। जो ऑनरेरी मजिस्ट्रेट व नगर कौंसिल फाजिल्का के उपाध्यक्ष स्व. हजूर सिंह की याद में श्री मोहरी राम चुघ व चौ. राज कुमार चुघ द्वारा बनवाया गया। इस गेट का उद्घाटन जिला फिरोजपुर के डिप्टी कमिश्नर श्री एम. आर. सचदेव ने 5 जून 1939 में किया गया। यहां उल्लेखनीय है कि डीसी एम. आर. सचदेव ने फाजिल्का के विकास में अहम योगदान दिया। इन्होंने ही एम. आर. कॉलेज का नींव पत्थर 4-7-1940 को रखा था।
